MycoBrew Afternoon at Sandy Valley

MycoBrew Afternoon at Sandy Valley

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!!

Join us on Sunday, November 19th for an afternoon of learning about the wild mushrooms of our region while enjoying delicious and unique beverages and tasty food! We have teamed up with Sandy Valley Brewery to offer this one-of-a-kind, mushroom-focused experience.

We were lucky to be able to harvest a large amount of chanterelle mushrooms this summer, and a portion of our haul made its way over to the amazing and creative folks over at Sandy Valley. They have crafted a fabulous chanterelle beer and this event will be the official release, so you could be one of the first people to try this unique and bold creation!

We think Sandy Valley is doing some really cool things with their creative brews that often feature locally-foraged ingredients and we are honored to be a small part of making this one happen.

While you enjoy the fruits of our collective labor, Mike will give a talk about how to forage mushrooms safely and effectively here in the lower Midwest. He’ll cover some basic mushroom identification info, then show you the most-commonly encountered poisonous fungi to avoid as well as some of the best edibles and how to prepare them. We will also be assembling some Oyster Mushroom grow kits that will produce gourmet mushrooms right on your countertop!

In addition to the talk, participants will assemble their own Oyster mushroom grow kit to take home, and also get one chanterelle beer to enjoy! Space is very limited so don’t hesitate to get your spot so you can join in on the fun!

Tickets are for one person and are non-refundable. Follow this link to purchase:

Shiitake Log Workshop

THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!

Join us on our homestead on October 21st for a fun and informative workshop on how to grow your own gourmet shiitake mushrooms at home!

Participants will be inoculating hardwood logs with shiitake sawdust spawn and each student will be taking home their own log. This is a chance to cut the learning curve by years by gaining hands-on experience with cultivation tools and by learning the ins and outs of small-scale shiitake mushroom production from us.

·         We’ll demonstrate proper techniques for the drill and fill method of log inoculation. Everyone will get the chance to do each step with their own log.

·         We will also demonstrate how to use larger diameter logs to assemble totems. This is a perfect way to utilize the larger, base portions of trees that are harvested for mushroom production.

·         We’ll detail ways to ensure successful log cultivation, from how to select which trees to use for cultivating shiitake, all the way to harvesting techniques and ways to prepare and preserve your harvest.

·         You will learn where to locate your mushroom logs and how to maintain and care for them to encourage large flushes of delicious mushrooms.

·         You’ll see our mushroom growing area and learn how to set up a cultivation spot of your own.

·         For those interested, Mike will also do a wild mushroom walk afterwards.

If you are interested in growing shiitake mushrooms outdoors at home for personal use or to sell, this is the workshop for you!

We will be using power tools and hot wax, so this workshop is not appropriate for small children. The workshop will be outdoors - please come dressed for the weather! This event is rain or shine but in the event of severe weather we will reschedule. Tickets are for one participant and are non-refundable. The location will be sent after registration, we are just south of Edgar Springs, MO.

Out of all our classes and workshops, shiitake log inoculation is the most-requested class. Space is limited so if you want to learn these techniques from us, don’t hesitate to sign up - this one will certainly fill up quickly! Follow the link to reserve your spot!

Morel Hunting for Beginners

This is your chance to learn about the most sought-after wild mushroom in the Midwest, the elusive morel. Join us Saturday, April 8th for a walk in an Ozark creek bottom as we identify key points of prime morel hunting areas. This class will be geared towards beginners. We will be learning:
• How to identify trees that morels are associated with.
• The different species of morels that occur in our region.
• How to know when to start looking for morels.
• The ecological roles and interactions of this fascinating fungus.
• Many other details to watch for when trying to find prime morel-hunting habitats.
Although there is a possibility we will see some mushrooms, this will NOT be a morel foraging hike – we will not be picking morels! This class is to give you access to a lot of knowledge gained from our years of foraging fungi, and to experience and explore an area that is known to produce morels.
The class is being held on private property about a half hour south of Rolla, MO. The exact location will be sent to participants just prior to the date. We will have the class rain or shine but will reschedule if severe weather is on the way. Dress appropriately for a walk in the wet woods (long pants, sturdy shoes or boots, rain gear). The class will be about two hours long.
