Morel Hunting for Beginners

  • Edgar Springs, MO (map)

This is your chance to learn about the most sought-after wild mushroom in the Midwest, the elusive morel. Join us Saturday, April 8th for a walk in an Ozark creek bottom as we identify key points of prime morel hunting areas. This class will be geared towards beginners. We will be learning:
• How to identify trees that morels are associated with.
• The different species of morels that occur in our region.
• How to know when to start looking for morels.
• The ecological roles and interactions of this fascinating fungus.
• Many other details to watch for when trying to find prime morel-hunting habitats.
Although there is a possibility we will see some mushrooms, this will NOT be a morel foraging hike – we will not be picking morels! This class is to give you access to a lot of knowledge gained from our years of foraging fungi, and to experience and explore an area that is known to produce morels.
The class is being held on private property about a half hour south of Rolla, MO. The exact location will be sent to participants just prior to the date. We will have the class rain or shine but will reschedule if severe weather is on the way. Dress appropriately for a walk in the wet woods (long pants, sturdy shoes or boots, rain gear). The class will be about two hours long.
